At 14 rue des Tondeurs, the Crampous Mad crêperie has been part of the Mulhouse city centre landscape for more than 40 years. Here is the story of this place, from its opening to today.
1980: Mulhouse's first crêperie
The Crampous Mad crêperie opened its doors on Friday 26 September 1980. Its owners, Vicki and Bertrand, created the first crêperie in Mulhouse, with seating for 50.
1990: the restaurant expands
Faced with its success, Vicki and Bertrand bought the adjoining building in 1990: the restaurant's capacity grew to 90 covers, and the team expanded to 10 people. The crêperie became a must-visit address in the city centre.
A menu that kept growing richer
Over the decades, the menu grew ever richer without ever losing its Breton roots: more than 100 recipes of buckwheat galettes and wheat crêpes, also adapted to Alsatian tastes. Vicki and Bertrand liked to say they had watched several generations of the same families grow up, coming back to share a convivial moment at Crampous Mad.
2016: Françoise and David take over
In 2015, after more than 30 years in business, Vicki and Bertrand decided to retire. They found their successors in Françoise Ritzenthaler and David Charles, two friends they had known for several years. The handover happened smoothly in 2016, with a clear goal: fully renovate the restaurant while keeping the soul of the place intact.
The crêperie today
Since then, Françoise and David have kept up the tradition: galettes and crêpes cooked one by one to order, local produce (vegetables from the Fischer farm in Zimmersheim, 100% Alsatian eggs), in a décor that blends Alsace and Brittany.
