In 2017, during the Journée citoyenne (Citizens' Day), volunteers set up urban vegetable plots right in the centre of Mulhouse. Since then, urban gardening has grown. Here is how to get your hands in the soil in Mulhouse today.

19 shared gardens, open to all

The City of Mulhouse lists 19 shared gardens, open to residents, associations and schools: Bas Rebberg, Bourtzwiller, Coteaux, Daguerre, Drouot, Carré des associations… The closest to the centre is the one at La Filature (105 avenue Roger Salengro), opened in May 2025.

There is no single registration procedure: to take part, simply contact the garden in your neighbourhood.

A new urban farm project of around 2,500 m² is also under way in the Coteaux district, rue Eugène Delacroix.

The permis de végétaliser

Would you like to plant flowers around the foot of a tree or on a strip of pavement outside your home? With the permis de végétaliser (planting permit), residents can plant in public spaces. It is valid for 3 years and is requested from the City using a form (permisdevegetaliser@mulhouse.fr), with a reply within two months.

Allotment gardens

To grow your own plot, Mulhouse also has jardins familiaux (allotment gardens), run by an association supported by the City. Contact the association directly to find out about availability.

What about the Journée citoyenne?

Held in Mulhouse since 2012, the Journée citoyenne (Citizens' Day) has brought together up to 700 residents around dozens of projects, such as those famous vegetable plots in 2017. The last confirmed edition in Mulhouse dates back to 2019. Today, the initiative continues in many towns across the metropolitan area (m2A), around a national date in May.

In Mulhouse, the new municipal team organised a big citizens' clean-up day on 19 September 2026, with 31 routes setting off from six points, including Place de la Réunion.
